Google News and Machine Gatekeepers: Algorithmic Personalisation and News Diversity in Online News Search

Through a mixed methods research design, we address normative aspects of news recommendation engines by examining whether search personalisation and diversity are evident on Google News in the UK. First, quasi-experimental asked diverse set participants (N = 78) to using four terms report first five articles recommended for each term. We found little evidence personalisation, which challenges claim that algorithms contribute weakened viewpoint diversity. also high degree homogeneity results, with legacy media brands dominating.
